We’ve come a long way: Are you part of the new, richer sex?

In many cases, we are earning more than men and often, more than our husbands. This is big news – it has made the cover of both Maclean’s and Time magazines. According to Maclean’s, in 1976, only 11% of Canadian wives earned more than their husbands. In the 1980s, that number increased to 19%. The last time Stats Canada measured, in 2009, 31% of wives in dual-income marriages earned more than their hubbies. In the US, the figure is even higher, where almost 40% of working wives out-earn their husbands. read more »

Baby, you’re a breadwinner!

More women than ever out-earn their partners

Baby, you’re a breadwinner! Move over sugar daddies, sugar mamas are on the rise! A demographic shift in the number of women versus men with university degrees means that 20-something women earn on average eight percent more than their male counterparts. In big cities it can be even higher – a New York City survey revealed that single women in their 20s are earning on average 17% more than men. Meanwhile, a 2010 British study found that nearly 20% of women between the ages of 16 and 60 earn more than their husbands or boyfriends and another 25% earn the same. If these trends continue – and statistics indicate they will – it won’t be long before the breadwinning mantle is officially passed! read more »

Why men still have more wealth than women
(and what we can do to catch up)

Women’s income is on the rise, but we’re falling behind on financial planning

But while the wage gender gap is well-documented (with women historically earning less than their male counterparts), what is less often discussed is the gender gap in general wealth and financial planning. And make no mistake, there is a sizable gap there as well - with women again at a disadvantage - according to a study released by HSBC. read more »
