Don’t sell yourself short: How to land that raise & negotiate like a leader

Women’s reluctance to negotiate has big financial repercussions

Don’t sell yourself short: How to land that raise & negotiate like a leader The disparity in pay between men and women in the workforce is nothing new (though thankfully, narrowing). The glass ceiling is still in place in many professions, but some experts say the salary gap isn't the fault of employers; it's the women who are to blame. According to Dr. Linda Babcock and Sara Lashever, authors of the book Women Don't Ask, the real reason why women aren't rising up the pay scale is because we're too scared to sit down at the table. In many cases, we are earning more than men and often, more than our husbands. This is big news – it has made the cover of both Maclean’s and Time magazines. According to Maclean’s, in 1976, only 11% of Canadian wives earned more than their husbands. In the 1980s, that number increased to 19%. The last time Stats Canada measured, in 2009, 31% of wives in dual-income marriages earned more than their hubbies. In the US, the figure is even higher, where almost 40% of working wives out-earn their husbands. read more »
